The Greek Chain

Prologue

The Greek Chain method was crafted by Flemming 'Tiler' Nielsen in the winter of 2024 in Aarhus, Denmark.

The idea came about partly due to a recent loss in immidiate family, which sparked the thought process about, what we leave behind when our time on this planet is over?

The letters that you have before you is a free, simple method to transfer cryptographic keys to your relatives in the next century, through the will and dedication of your own family.

There are no trademarks, copyrights or patents invoked in the Greek Chain.

The Greek Chain is not financial advice. It is not possible to lose bitcoin or codes by enabling the Greek Chain. Only you can do that by negligence.

Always stay vigilant and responsible when handling your codes/keys.

Never share your codes/keys with anyone not related to you.

The Introduction letter

You have now opened the Greek Chain that contains part of the private key code to your generation’s bitcoin inheritance.

It is your privilege and responsibility, together with the three other Greek Chain holders, to meet up, unlock, and then distribute the bitcoin that has been collected here by your ancestors.

It is important that you come to this meeting prepared, focused, and well-rested.

Please keep in mind. You are the distributors of the Greek Chain.

Not the judges.

Everybody gets the same cut. Even the black sheeps in your family.

Be mindful. One simple typing error can have fatal consequences for the transfers.

Before the meeting, obtain a hardware wallet and familiarize yourself with how it works.

Also collect the names and wallet addresses of all the beneficiaries of your generation. Be sure to get this right.

Any trustworthy hardware wallet that accepts 24-word phrase codes can be used.

Buy it directly from the manufacturer’s website for increased security.

The 23 keywords can be gathered from the envelopes when you all meet.

The 24th secret keyword must be obtained from a previous generation, so remember to ask them.

Otherwise you'll have to brute force your way in, by utilizing the words of the BIP39 protocol.

Never ever share the codes or keywords with anyone outside your immediate family.

Envelope Lett

The envelope

You may think of yourself as the direct descendant of your great-great-grandparents — and you’d be absolutely right.

But what you may not have considered is that out there somewhere, there are relatives you’ve never met - perhaps never even heard of - who feels exactly the same. And they’re just as right.

That’s why the contact list matters: it helps your descendants keep track of all the rightful heirs.

The first thing to do, is to get hold of 12 solid envelopes, size A4 or letter format.

Draw a scheme on the front of each envelope with three columns :

Birth date, Name and Contact-info

Fill in your own personal information in the first row, your spouse in the next and then your childrens in the following rows

Instruct your children to keep the contact list updated onwards

The back of the envelopes is reserved for 3 QR codes for each generations wallet, so that further funds can be added over time.

These envelopes will hold the entire Greek Chain for your family, so keep them safe

The creation letter

Get access to a laserprinter, a laminator, a label printer, four large fireproof envelopes, and a hardware wallet.

Use the wallet’s interface to generate a 24-word key phrase. Write these down accurately on paper.

Avoid any internet connection or use of cameras during this step.

Save the recipient QR code via the wallet's app browser as an image file on your computer.

Mark carefully which QR belongs to which generations wallet.

Reset the hardware wallet via the browser after both tasks are triple-checked.

Establish a secret shared keyword by generating new key phrases until one of the words matches a previously generated keyword.

Once found, repeat the process to generate a third and final 24-word key, which also contains the shared keyword. This might take time—BIP39 includes 2048 words, and you only get 24 per attempt. Be patient and persistent —it will work.

You now have three key phrases and three QR codes, representing the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation wallets.

Print 3 x 4 pages with numbered form fields for each of the 24 words.

Mark each of the three 4 piece set with their designated generation :

The Third, the Fourth & the Fifth

Name the 4 form fields as below :

SIGMA, ALPHA, THETA & OMEGA

Distribute the key words in the form fields as follows :

SIGMA :  1 to 8 and 13 to 16

 ALPHA :  5 to 12 and 17 to 20

THETA :  9 to 16 and 21 to 24

OMEGA : 1 to 4 and 17 to 24

This distribution ensures that any three of the four envelopes are sufficient enough to gain access to the bitcoin,

in the rare case, one envelope is lost.

Instruct your descendants to swiftly help recreate a lost envelope with the remaining Greek Chain letters, for higher security and durability.

Handwrite the keywords in their designated form fields and add text-labels for extra security.

The secret shared keyword must never be written down—it should be passed on orally to future generations. Mark its blank field with a question mark ( ? ).

Write a letter to your descendants. Include all instructions after laminating these for protection.

Now transfer a suitable amount of bitcoin towards each wallet’s QR code.

A friendly suggestion is to add just 1 percent of your bitcoin holdings for each of the three wallets, for starters.

It's a relatively manageable amount, and you can always add more later through the use of the QR codes.

Destroy and dispose all notes and key codes, so they don’t fall into the wrong hands.

Place all the envelopes in fireproof covers along with hardware wallets and ensure sufficient protection of these - ideally in secure vaults, accessible only to trusted family members.

The distribution letter

Dear grandchildren

This letter addresses the distribution of your bitcoin inheritance

33% shall be transferred to your previous generation’s shared wallet. If there are adopted or stepchildren to be considered, the funds must come from this portion. The same applies to any younger siblings born later. The rest of the amount can be managed unconditionally by your parents as they see fit.

1% shall cover all transfer fees. Whatever is left must be spend on organizing a summer party for family and friends. Your generation will be responsible for this. Have fun :)

66% shall be distributed equally and fairly among all direct descendants in your generation.

We trust each of you, to manage these funds exactly as you see fit.

However, please consider whether at some point you yourself would like to start your own branch of the Greek Chain, for the benefit of future generations, using some of the funds. This is your decision entirely.

If conditions are not favorable for handling bitcoin in your time, then keep them secure instead, and consider passing them on to the next generation using the QR codes attached.

Be aware that this action is irreversible, so choose wisely.

Seek qualified financial & tax advice from professionals, such as an accountant or a lawyer specialized in crypto.

The ancestors letter

Dear grandchild

Today we have set aside some funds for you, future generations, in the hope that they can make a positive difference for you and your family.

You are reading this letter because you have been chosen to distribute your generation's bitcoin. This is a great responsibility, but we trust that you will carry out this entrusted task, fairly and properly.

Inside the envelope is an overview of what is expected of you, as the custodian of your generation's share. Please be discreet about the contents of these envelopes with outsiders.

You might also consider starting your own bitcoin legacy to benefit future generations. In the envelope, you will also find the guide to the Greek Chain

A little about us:

Rhea, you grandmother works as a public school teacher at the local school and she was recently elected union representative by her colleagues.

I run a tiling and masonry company, focusing on tile work and house repairs in the southside of our city.

Together, we have two wonderful children that you already know, Hera and Chronos.

We have all lived together in the small house on Poseidon Street with all its ups and downs through the years.

It’s been a good and fairly typical middle-class life, which was a small step up the social ladder from our previous generations, who all belonged to either the working or the farming class.

We are among the last generation who were born before cryptocurrency emerged, with the introduction of bitcoin in 2009. In fact ,most of both Rhea and my own youth took place without any access to cellphones, streaming, or the internet. That kind of life also has its own charm -

We hope and wish for you all to have a long and prosperous life, full of success, experiences, and not least..lots of love.

Grandma & Grandpa

PS - Be excellent to each other.

The instruction letter

This letter is a checklist of the things that you will have to remind future recipients of the letters about.

It is mostly just common sense.

Most importantly it must be emphasized that the letters must be kept safe. It is advisable to let the oldest family-members keep them in custody for as long as possible. The next generation must be made aware how to access and store the letters in the case of emergencies.

In the best case scenario, it will be only you - and then later, your mature grandchildren - who safeguards the Greek Chain letters, on behalf of all of your descendants.

The chosen secret passphrase word must be passed to the next generation in due time.

In the case of some confiscation, armed robbery or an unfortunate divorce, instruct your decendants never to fight over their letters. It is much wiser to simply hand over the 1/4 of a Greek Chain to whoever demands it.

It will be completely worthless without the remaining codes which, of course, is in their cousins possession.

They are not obliged to hand over anything.

When the dust settles, the missing letters can easily be restored again with your relatives assistance.

Remember to add every newborn family member to the contact lists of all the Greek Chain envelopes.
